Choirs

One thing that grew out of the Welsh activities in the area at the start of the 1970's was the Eisteddfod Gadeiriol Cylch Godre'r Garth. Efail Isaf village hall was full with enthusiastic competitions of all sorts, including the mixed choir competition  - 20. Choir (not being under 15 in number): Huddersfield, Rhif 354 - Caniedydd.
Three choirs competed - Côr Aelwyd Pontypridd, Côr Tonteg a Chôr Efail Isaf, and because the enthusiasm was so great at that time Wil Morus Jones and Penri Jones had the idea of forming one choir from the three to compete in Eisteddfod Bro Myrddin at the start of August 1974.
38 members attended the first practice in Tabernacl Chapel, Efail Isaf; and within three weeks there were over 70 choristers busy practising the anthem Hosanna by T.Hopkin Evans. Of the nine choirs that competed in the Chapels and Rural Choirs Competition, the new choir - Côr Godre'r Garth - won, with 94 marks out of 100 and the quote from the judges adjudication was that the standard of the performance was 'thrilling'.
